A LIVE Design Competition

to Celebrate Boston's Historic Architecture.

Working with set parameters, such as lot size, square footage, and style, your task for three days will be to design and hand-draw a new “old” house for one of Boston's most famous historic districts. 

How to Enter

To qualify for the Traditional Building Design Challenge you must submit an application, $100 entry fee and up to 3 examples of your work.  Portfolio submissions should include renderings, images, or photos of specific projects that reflect your experience and knowledge of the traditionally-inspired movement. 

A panel of judges will determine the finalists from the entries received prior to February 22, 2008.  Upon notice all finalist will receive an information package outlining the scope of project.

During the Live Design Challenge, all competitors are expected to design and "draw by hand" a presentation plan view of each habitable floor, an exterior elevation of the front facade, and a site plan, which may be incorporated with the floor plan view.

As a participant, they will be busily working at locations where conference attendees can observe and interact. 

Where and When

The LIVE Design Challenge will take place during the exhibit hall hours, March 13-15, 2008 at the Hynes Convention Center in historic Back Bay of Boston, during the Traditional Building Show.

Exhibit Hall hours:

Thursday             March 13:  11:00am-5:00pm

Friday                 March 14:  11:00am-5:00pm

Saturday             March 15:  11:00am-4:00pm

Final Presentation

Final presentation to be on 18" x 24" drawing vellum (will be provided).  Must be hand drawn in pencil or marker.  Presentation must include floor plans for all finished living areas including and attic areas and at least the front and rear elevations.  Site plan must show best location of house, patios, driveway and walks.

Design Program

The specific design program which will list the required rooms, sizes and the desired amenities will be provided at the orientation prior to commencement of the competition at the Traditional Building Show.  Questions on any items needing clarification shall be directed to the competition proctor during the competition with all designers present.

Sponsored Products

Certain manufacturers are participating in the design competition as sponsors, therefore, the style and amenities of the submittal must be compatible with each of the products being represented.  Inclusion of products will be a judging criteria. 

What to Expect

Contestants will be provided with a workstation on the trade show floor situated among regular exhibitors and live events.  The workstation will include a minimum 24" deep flat working surface arranged in an "L" shape with approx. 48" of table top in each of two directions.  A chair and electrical outlet and 18" x 24" sheets of vellum will also be provided.  Contestants may supply any personal items, tools, supplies and.or reference materials.  All items must fit on, attach to or be placed directly below the working surface.  The placement of workstations allow for show attendees to observe and interact with the contestants while working. 

Judging and Award Presentations

The presentation of designs and awards will take place at 2:00pm Saturday March 15 in the Exhibit Hall. 

All designs must be completed by 1:00pm.     

Prizes

Grand Prize Winner:

  1. Will be featured in Old House Journal's New Old House Magazine through printed publications and electronic media.
