Restoration & Renovation Chicago 2003 industry advisory board plans September event at Navy Pier.

NORTH READING, MASSACHUSETTS, FEBRUARY 1, 2003---After a six-year hiatus, the Restoration & Renovation Exhibition and Conference is returning to Chicago in September. The event will run at the Navy Pier, with educational sessions running over three days (September 18-20) and exhibits over two (September 19 and 20).

A roster of well-known professionals from the design, architecture, preservation, and facilities management communities will convene on February 5 at the Sheraton Chicago to lay plans for the show. They will be defining the overall theme for the event and suggesting specific topics and speakers germane to the preservation of the historic fabric of the built environment in the midwest and the City of Chicago.

Discussion at the Advisory Board meeting in the Sheraton Chicago is certain to be especially lively in light of a recent investigation conducted by the Chicago Tribune. Their research has revealed that hundreds of historically significant buildings within the city have been demolished and in many cases without proper permits. "We have what is tantamount to stealth demolition," Restoration & Renovation Industry Advisory Board member David Bahlman is quoted as saying in the Tribune article. Mr. Bahlman is President of the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois.

According to Bahlman, highly visible preservation projects in the downtown have masked what is really going on - namely demolition of entire blocks of buildings that are destroying the historic character of the neighborhoods.
