FOUR ARCHITECTURAL FIRMS TAKE TOP HONORS
IN 2004 PALLADIO COMPETITION

NORTH READING, MASSACHUSETTS, February 10, 2004-The third annual Palladio Awards design competition has cited four firms for outstanding work in traditional architecture in commercial, civic and institutional projects. The Palladio Awards Program was named after Andrea Palladio, the Renaissance architect who created modern architecture for his time while using models from the past for inspiration.

Winners were announced in four categories: Restoration & Renovation, Adapative Re-use and/or Sympathetic Additions, New Design & Construction (under $2 million construction costs) and New Design and Construction (over $2 million) and in four corresponding residential categories.

The winners include:

* Joseph K. Oppermann – Architect, P.A., of Winston-Salem, NC, Joseph K. Oppermann, principal in charge, in the Restoration & Renovation category for the restoration of Market Hall in Charleston, SC. Built in 1841, the 4,200-sq.ft. building features a pedimented entrance portico with a grand double staircase The comprehensive restoration involved replacing the missing oculus, restoring various faux finishes, repainting in original colors and restoring the ground floor to an open-air market. The second-floor was converted into a Civil War Museum.

* Bushman Dreyfus Architects PLC of Charlottesville, VA, Jeff Dreyfus, principal in charge, in the Adaptive Re-use and Sympathetic Additions category for the relocation, restoration and adaptive reuse of Cobb Station Coast Guard Station in Oyster, VA. Owned by The Nature Conservancy, the Coast Guard Station had to be moved across open water to the mainland and rebuilt on the new foundation. It was converted into a guest facility, keeping as much of the original 1936 “Roosevelt era” design as possible. The final building includes 8,375 sq.ft. of renovated space and 2,950 sq.ft. of new space.

* Geoffrey Mouen Architects of Celebration, FL, Geoffrey Mouen, principal in charge, in the under $2 million New Design & Construction category for the Baldwin Park Unit Community Center in Orlando, FL. This multi-functional center houses a meeting hall, exercise facility, pool area and children’s play area in two wings. The goal was to design a neighborhood civic building that fit into the residential character of the developing village neighborhood. This was done by keeping it to one story and by using details such as a cupola, clock and eyebrow eaves to accentuate the entrance.

* Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York City, Robert A.M. Stern, principal in charge, in the over $2 million New Design & Construction category for the John L. Vogelstein ’52 dormitory at The Taft School in Watertown, CT. This new residence hall uses the Collegiate Gothic vocabulary to maintain the historic appearance of the campus. It includes three classrooms, 48 student rooms, four common rooms and four faculty apartments.

“These projects illustrate the variety and quality of traditional architectural design being done throughout the country,” says Clem Labine, founder of Traditional Building and Period Homes magazines. Complete information on the winning projects will be published in the May/June issue of Traditional Building magazine.

The awards are sponsored by Restore Media, publisher of Traditional Building and Period Homes magazines and producer of the Restoration & Renovation Exhibition and Conference.
