Traditional Building Conference

Baltimore 2009: Keynote Address

Architectural Record Editor-In-CHief Robert Ivy, FAIA, TO Deliver Keynote Address at the Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference, Oct 23, 2009 in Baltimore.

Seminars, workshops, architectural tours, craftsmanship demonstrations and unique product exhibits will present smart solutions in a challenging market to architects, engineers, building owners, facilities managers, contractors and special trades professionals who do historic preservation and traditional building October 21-24, 2009 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Keynote speaker Robert Ivy, FAIA, will discuss the relationship between sustainability, preservation architecture and economic vitality during this four-day conference and exhibition.

"In a down economy it makes good sense to make the most of what we have…preservation is environmentally correct and the most sustainable thing you can do," advises Ivy in Architectural Record's "Strategy Issue."  Mr. Ivy plans a special issue on adaptive use and preservation architecture this summer. "We are delighted to have such a well-respected editor of the mainstream architectural press talk about the importance of what our attendees do," notes Judy Hayward, education director for the Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference. "His keynote will inform, inspire and help preservationists articulate why traditional building is important culturally, environmentally and economically."

The Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference is the largest learning and networking event serving the $170 billion traditional building market. There will be AIA Continuing Education Credits offered for sessions on historic tax credits, code compliance, "green" restoration and rehabilitation, material science, traditional craft skills and how to work with federal agencies to preserve, maintain and improve our existing building inventory. Architects and allied professionals can earn up to 24 CEUs in four days.

The Exhibit Hall will feature unique, custom made, top-of-the-line products for both residential and nonresidential applications. The manufacturers and craftspeople who make these products will be on hand to consult with attendees. Traditional Building Live demonstrations will take place on the exhibit floor, free.

Baltimore is a vibrant city of historic neighborhoods and monuments. From the Basilica of the Assumption, to Homewood Mansion, to the ubiquitous row house, Baltimore has maintained a rich variety of historic buildings. The Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference will identify lessons from the built environment in Baltimore and the surrounding Chesapeake Bay region. "It is the ideal city in which to learn, network and have fun'' says Hayward.
