Traditional Building Conference speakers are carefully selected by the Education Director and the Conference Advisory Board. Presenters must have both strong industry credentials and the ability to communicate their facts and ideas in a compelling way. Speakers are industry professionals with knowledge and expertise in historic preservation (including but not limited to, planning, design, project management, construction and finance); urban planning; new urbanism; facility management,; construction trades and material science.

Demetra Aposporos spent nearly a dozen years working as a writer and editor at National Geographic before joining Old-House Journal as senior editor in 2005.  She has written dozens of articles on topics ranging from historical overviews, like the advent of color in bathrooms and the emergence of 1950s atomic wallpaper to in-depth how-to’s on creating curved moldings and laying brick walkways.

Elaine Rice Bachmann is the Director of Artistic Property, Exhibits and Outreach at the Maryland State Archives and oversees the interpretation of the Maryland State House.  She is the co-author, with James A. Abbott, of Designing Camelot:  The Kennedy White House Restoration and has authored numerous articles on antiques and interiors, as well as on Maryland’s state-owned art collection.  She is a graduate of Indiana University and the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture at the University of Delaware.

Alec Bennett entered Federal service in 2005 as a historian with the National Cemetery Administration through the Presidential Management Fellows program.  In this position he is engaged in the research and documentation of national cemeteries and the soldiers interred in them.  Mr. Bennett also works on the preservation of historic buildings, monuments, headstones, and other cultural resources within national cemeteries.  He holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Anthropology from the College of William and Mary and an M.A. in Historic Preservation Planning Master’s program from Cornell University.

Martin Brandwein, AIA is a New York architect specializing in traditional design.  His firm has worked on projects including the restoration of a Brooklyn townhouse which received the Lucy G. Leslie L. Buhler is the Executive Director of Tudor Place Historic House and Garden in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C.  Built between 1975 and 1816 for Thomas and Martha Custis Peter, the museum is a significant historic venue with diverse and extensive collections.  Ms. Buhler began her museum career at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where she worked on the Lehman Wing expansion.  She has directed both adult and children programs at the Smithsonian Resident Associate Program and has worked for the National Archives and Records Service.  She joined Tudor Place as Executive Director in 2000.

Scott Harmon graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1964 and spent the next four and a half yours serving in destroyers. Leaving the Navy, he received an M.A. in History from Utah State University and a Ph.D. in History from the College of William and Mary. He joined the National Park Service in 1974 as a historian in the Publications Division of  the Interpretive Design Center in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. In 1980 he transferred to the exhibits division of the Center.  As an Exhibit Planner he worked on a wide variety of exhibit projects, including the USS Arizona Memorial, Springfield Armory National Historic Site, Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site, and the National Prisoner of War Museum at Andersonville, Georgia. In 1998, he received his current appointment as Director of the US Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, Maryland. He has been involved in every facet of the renovation of Preble Hall, the home of the Museum since 1939. After being closed for some eighteen months, the Museum reopened its doors to visitors in summer of 2009.
