Wednesday, October 21 Pre-Conference Tours and Workshops

W01 Conducting an Historic Building Assessment with the AIA Historic Resources Committee – Orianda, the Crimea Estate, Leakin Park, Baltimore National Heritage Area Baltimore, MD
Pre-registration required.  

Learn the basics of conditions, assessments and historic structures reports in one day with seasoned practitioners.  At the same time your participation will help the City of Baltimore, the property’s owner, and Baltimore’s Outward Bound program, the property’s nonprofit tenant.

W02 Similar Buildings, Different Preservation Treatments: The Lodges in Baltimore’s Historic National Cemeteries  
Pre-registration required.  

This session is ideal for people familiar with historic structures reports and for those who preserve historic cemeteries. This session will begin with a discussion of the structures reports for two lodges at two national cemeteries.  Participants will then board a bus to visit two cemeteries within the city. Stretch your legs and your mind! There will be extensive walking over hilly terrain to view the lodges’ exteriors and to discuss the treatment of a selected monument.

W03 Homewood Museum Tour at Johns Hopkins University Pre-registration required.

The tradition of Federal Period architecture with Palladian elements is alive and well in this Johns Hopkins University museum.   Hear about Homewood’s recent porch restoration from local craftsman,  David Gibney,  and observe fine period architectural ornament and furnishings on a guided tour by museum staff.

 

 

W04 Annapolis Tour:  Modern Systems in Historic Buildings:  The Maryland Statehouse and the Naval Academy Museum 

We’ll venture outside the city limits to visit historically significant collections in two historic buildings to learn how modern systems can be installed while respecting historic character.  The Treaty of Paris was ratified in the Maryland Statehouse.  Preeble Hall features an outstanding museum collection that documents United States naval history.

W06 Baltimore Building Crafts Tour- Pre-registration required- Attendance Limited

This tour will offer visits to three working studios in Baltimore City.  Woodturning, ornamental ironwork, and ornamental plaster will be the featured building crafts in this exploration of artisans at work. Bring your questions and your cameras for this behind the scenes visit.

W08 Latrobe in Baltimore: Workshop & Tour- The Basilica and Davidge Hall, University of Maryland

Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820) worked on the U.S. Capitol from 1803-1814. He was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson and they consulted one another on several projects. This workshop and tour will cover Latrobe’s work in Baltimore- extant and lost. The Baltimore Basilica was designed by Latrobe.  It has been called the most beautiful Neoclassical building in America. Its recent restoration and rehabilitation was awarded a 2009 AIA Honor Award.  Davidge Hall features two anatomical theaters at the University of Maryland Medical School.  Recent discoveries have lead historians to conclude that they are the work of Latrobe.

The Federal Tax Credits for historic preservation are powerful financial incentives for economic revitalization .  This workshop and tour will take you to an industrial site adaptive use.
