Hank Handler, a noted craftsman and master builder, co-founded Oak Grove Restoration Company 40 years ago to specialize in the conservation, preservation, restoration, and retrofitting of historic buildings. During the last four decades, he developed the company to integrate general contracting and design-build capabilities with skilled craftsmanship. The incorporation of a traditional millwork shop allows for the direct and detailed control over the repair and replication of historic millwork, windows, and doors. The facility provides comprehensive building conservation and restoration services throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
The company’s clients—many of them repeat customers—include state and local governments, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Park Service, universities, private homeowners, historic sites, and house museums. In 2008, his work at two National Trust Historic Sites—the Decatur House and President Lincoln’s Cottage—was recognized with the AIA/DC Design Excellence Award for Historic Resources and the District of Columbia Mayor’s Award for Historic Preservation, respectively. Preservation Texas recognized Oak Grove Restoration Company’s work at the McFaddin-Ward House Historic Museum in Beaumont, Texas with one of seven Historic Restoration Honor Awards given to projects across the state in 2009. The company received the 2014 State Historic Preservation Officer’s Award from the District of Columbia Preservation League for the restoration, structural upgrades, and seismic retrofit work on the Sherman Building Earthquake Recovery Project.
